Intro
Protective textiles can only perform as intended when the seam supports the protection level of the complete product. A conventional thermoplastic sewing thread may melt or lose strength when exposed to high temperatures. Flame- and heat-resistant seams therefore require specialised raw materials and validated seam constructions.
Meta-aramid and para-aramid threads are designed for different performance profiles. Meta-aramids provide flame resistance and long-term temperature stability, while para-aramids add very high strength and cut resistance. The correct solution depends on the hazard, exposure time, required mechanical performance and relevant product standard.

Flame resistance, heat resistance and thermal stability
These terms describe different aspects of performance. A self-extinguishing, non-melting thread behaves differently from a standard synthetic thread, but the finished seam and garment must still be tested as a complete system. Thread performance alone does not certify the protective product.
Key factors to consider
- Hazard profile: Define whether the product faces open flame, radiant heat, hot surfaces, molten splashes or continuous elevated temperature.
- Required standard: The complete protective product must comply with the relevant industry and application requirements.
- Raw material: Meta-aramid and para-aramid offer different balances of heat resistance, strength, flexibility and cut protection.
- Construction: Spun, cut-staple and continuous filament constructions influence appearance, strength and sewing behaviour.
- Care process: Industrial laundering, cleaning and repeated use can affect the complete textile system and must be included in validation.
Typical applications
- Firefighter and emergency-service clothing
- Industrial protective clothing
- Heat-protective gloves and equipment

| Nc-tech | Nomex® meta-aramid continuous filament for highly demanding flame- and heat-protective applications. |
| A-tech | High-performance meta-aramid spun sewing and embroidery thread; an alternative to Nomex®. |
| A-tech CS | Meta-aramid cut-staple thread for flame-retardant and heat-protective sewing and embroidery. |

| Kc-tech | Bonded para-aramid continuous filament for high-performance technical textiles with cut and heat-protective requirements. |
Important technical note
The protective performance of a finished product cannot be inferred from the sewing thread alone. The complete material, seam design and product must be tested against the applicable standard.
