Intro
Cut-protective textiles are used where sharp edges, blades or abrasive contact can endanger the user or damage the product. The seam is a potential weak point: even when the surrounding fabric provides high cut resistance, an unsuitable sewing thread can reduce the integrity of the construction.
Para-aramid threads combine high tensile performance with resistance to cutting and heat. The correct seam solution depends on the protection level, material structure, seam position, thread size and stitch design. The entire product must be tested because cut protection results from the complete construction.

The seam must support the protective structure
Cut protection is not achieved simply by replacing a standard thread with a para-aramid thread. Stitch density, seam allowance, layer structure and load direction determine whether the seam maintains the intended barrier. The thread also needs to withstand the sewing process without excessive damage.
Key factors to consider
- Protection level: Define the required cut-performance class and the relevant test method for the finished product.
- Material system: Woven, knitted, coated and composite structures distribute cutting forces differently.
- Thread construction: Schappe-spun and bonded continuous filament para-aramid threads provide different balances of flexibility, strength and sewing stability.
- Needle and cutting devices: High-performance fibres can increase wear on cutting and sewing components; machine settings and maintenance must be adapted.
- UV exposure: Para-aramid is sensitive to prolonged UV exposure and is generally not recommended for unprotected exterior use.
Typical applications
- Cut-protective gloves
- Protective sleeves and garments
- Technical textile guards
- Industrial protective equipment
- Composite reinforcement
- Filtration and high-strength textile structures
Find the right AMANN solution
| AMANN product | Recommended use within this solution |
|---|---|
| K-tech | Para-aramid schappe-spun thread for applications with high requirements for cut, flame and heat protection. |
| Kc-tech | Bonded para-aramid continuous filament for highly demanding technical textiles requiring cut and heat protection. |
| A-tech / N-tech | Meta-aramid options for adjacent flame- and heat-protective seam positions where cut protection is not the primary requirement. |
Important technical note
Cut-protective performance must be verified on the complete product. Thread selection alone does not define or certify the protection level.
