Intro
Cellulosic fabrics are widely used in apparel, home textiles and emerging circular material concepts. Conventional synthetic sewing threads can introduce a different polymer into an otherwise cellulose-based product. A cellulosic sewing thread can improve material compatibility and support monomaterial design strategies.
Biodegradability must always be understood in relation to defined conditions, product composition, dyes, finishes and disposal pathways. A biodegradable thread does not automatically make the complete product biodegradable. The full construction must be evaluated.

Why cellulosic thread construction matters
Traditional cellulosic threads often provide a different performance profile from synthetic continuous filaments. New cellulosic filament technologies aim to combine a nature-based raw material with improved strength, elongation and processing performance. This opens opportunities for cellulose-based monomaterial products without relying on a synthetic seam component.
Key factors to consider
- Fabric compatibility: The thread should support the fibre composition and intended end-of-life concept of the surrounding material.
- Performance: Strength, elongation, abrasion resistance and sewing behaviour must meet the application requirements.
- Biodegradation conditions: Claims must refer to defined environments and test conditions; real-world disposal routes may differ.
- Dyes and finishes: All chemical components of the thread and product influence the biological pathway.
- Product lifetime: The thread must remain durable during use and only enter a degradation pathway at the intended end of life.
Typical applications
- Cellulose-based apparel
- Ladieswear and menswear
- Children’s clothing
- Cellulosic embroidery
- Monomaterial design concepts
- Products designed for selected biological end-of-life pathways
Find the right AMANN solution
| AMANN product | Recommended use within this solution |
|---|---|
| AeoniQ™ Fil | High-performing continuous filament made from renewable cellulosic fibres. Supports cellulose-based monomaterial designs, contains no synthetic microplastic component and is positioned as biodegradable at end of life. |
| Mercifil / MercifilGD | Mercerised cotton threads for natural-fibre applications and garment dyeing where a classic cotton construction is required. |
Important technical note
Biodegradability claims must be evaluated for the complete product and the intended disposal conditions. Fibre composition, dyes, finishes and accessories all influence the result.
