Intro
Seams in footwear, bags, luggage, upholstery, belts, automotive interiors and technical products must withstand repeated mechanical stress. The thread is exposed not only during product use, but also during sewing, where friction, needle heat, sharp material edges and directional changes can damage the thread.
Thread strength alone does not define seam durability. Raw material, construction, thread size, bonding, stitch type, stitch density and seam design all contribute to the final performance. A highly abrasion-resistant thread is especially valuable where the seam remains exposed or moves repeatedly against the surrounding material.

Thread strength is only one part of seam durability
A strong thread can still fail if the seam design concentrates load at individual stitches, if the material cuts into the thread or if processing damage reduces the original strength. The objective is to balance tensile performance, abrasion resistance, elongation, sewability and visual requirements.
Key factors to consider
- Type of load: Determine whether the seam is exposed mainly to tension, abrasion, flexing, impact or a combination of these.
- Material edges: Leather, coated fabrics, composites and rigid components can create high friction and cutting stress.
- Thread construction: Continuous filament threads provide high strength; bonded constructions add stability for demanding sewing paths.
- Thread size: Coarser threads can increase seam strength and visual impact but require larger needles and create larger stitch holes.
- Seam design: Stitch type, seam allowance and stitch density must distribute the load without weakening the material.

- Shoes and safety footwear
- Bags, luggage and suitcases

Important technical note
The suitability of a sewing thread depends on the complete combination of material, seam construction, stitch type, needle, machine settings and finishing processes. Individual sewing trials and application-specific testing are recommended before production.
