Intro
Circular product development requires more than replacing virgin raw material with recycled content. The sewing thread connects materials and components and can either support or complicate the intended end-of-life process. It should therefore be considered from the beginning of product design.
A product designed for a biological cycle requires a different thread solution from one designed for a technical recycling cycle. Monomaterial concepts, material compatibility, dyes, finishes, disassembly and available recycling infrastructure all influence the correct choice.

Start with the intended end-of-life pathway
There is no single circular thread for every product. The best solution depends on whether the product is intended for biological degradation, fibre-to-fibre recycling, component reuse, repair or automated disassembly. Recycled content and circularity are related, but they are not the same concept.
Key factors to consider
- Biological or technical cycle: Define whether materials should safely return to biological systems or remain within a technical material loop.
- Monomaterial compatibility: Select a thread that supports the dominant fibre system where this improves recyclability.
- Design for disassembly: Consider whether seams should remain permanent or enable controlled separation of components.
- Dyes and finishes: Colourants, coatings and functional finishes must be compatible with the intended circular pathway.
- Infrastructure: The concept must reflect the actual collection, sorting, recycling or composting systems available.
- Performance and lifetime: Circularity starts with a product that performs reliably for its intended use and service life.
Typical applications
- Monomaterial apparel
- Circular workwear concepts
- Products designed for fibre-to-fibre recycling
- Design-for-disassembly garments
- Repairable and reusable products
- Biological-cycle products
- Technical-cycle textile systems
Find the right AMANN solution
| AMANN product | Recommended use within this solution |
|---|---|
| AeoniQ™ Fil | 100% cellulosic sewing and embroidery thread supporting cellulose-based monomaterial concepts and biodegradable end-of-life pathways. |
| Lifecycle Polyamide | 100% recycled polyamide continuous filament developed for the technical cycle. |
| Smart Stitch™ | Heat-dissolvable sewing thread technology for industrial design-for-disassembly and improved material recovery. |
| AMANN Recycled range | Application-specific recycled threads for products where recycled input is part of the circular material strategy. |
Important technical note
Circularity depends on the complete product system, including materials, dyes, finishes, components, collection and end-of-life infrastructure. A sewing thread can support a circular concept but cannot make a product circular on its own.
